Today, the campaign to end New Jersey’s prohibition on adult-use cannabis released a new ad highlighting the harms that the unfair and unjust enforcement of the state’s current cannabis laws have on residents.

Right now, New Jerseyans are arrested for cannabis-related crimes at the third highest rate in the United States; up to one-third of all arrests in the state are for cannabis-related offenses. The Garden State makes upwards of 32,000 arrests a year and spends about $143 million dollars on processing illegal cannabis possession charges alone.

A single cannabis possession charge means potential jail time and a criminal record that marks residents for life.

The campaign emphasized that the outdated and misguided cannabis laws put residents one incident away from a life where it is difficult to get a job, own a home, or even visit with their kids.

Voters will have the opportunity to vote “YES” on Public Question 1 on November’s ballot, which calls for the legalization of adult-use cannabis and will create new opportunities for entrepreneurs to participate in a sustainable and revenue-generating industry

The NJ CAN 2020 campaign is urging voters to #TurnThePage on their ballots and vote “YES” to end the state’s prohibition on adult-use cannabis.

About NJ CAN 2020

NJ CAN 2020 represents a coalition of New Jersey voters committed to creating fairness in the administration of the state’s marijuana laws and cannabis industry. We want to end the prohibition on marijuana in New Jersey and foster a regulated cannabis market that encourages inclusion for entrepreneurs across the state and creates good jobs and a new taxing authority for local governments when they need it most.
